Innovation in the sewerage sector at the Municipality of Apeldoorn

The rise of digitalization is a contemporary topic within the services provided by municipal authorities. Like many other municipalities, the Municipality of Apeldoorn has the ambition to be at the forefront of digital transformation. Currently they are putting LiDAR TO GO for digital sewer overhaul.

Together we are at the forefront of the development of digitalization in the Netherlands

Cees Petersen and his team are responsible for managing the sewer network of the Municipality of Apeldoorn. This not only includes traditional sewer management, but also managing the team that carries out first-line maintenance, the complete operational aspect. Within the municipality they have set a course to be at the forefront of developments, which is accompanied by challenges, innovations and new approaches. The transition to fully electric working with partners such as BAM is an example of this approach.

Digitization of work processes

Another major challenge is digitizing work processes. For example, at the municipality they still worked with the traditional method of sketching, which requires you to work on location with a surveyor and a prod. An attempt to use 3D scanning sounded promising, this breakthrough came when Cees and his team came into contact with The People Group.

The desire was clear: a digital software tool that makes management simple, efficient and user-friendly for employees. After some consultation, a joint pilot project was started for 3D scanning with the product LiDAR TO GO. “This technology not only proves to be user-friendly but also provides us with much more information than expected. Scanning streets reveals not only the construction of sewers, but also the location of other cables and pipes, giving us a wealth of data.” says Cees Petersen.

Now, a few months after implementing the pilot project, we are thinking about the next step together. Processing the scanned data and recording it digitally in a municipal management system. With this we hope to build a database with direct information for analyzes and decision-making of the future. Initially we will focus on the management of the sewer network, but ultimately the goal is to be able to roll this out internally in all areas.

Cees Petersen concludes with the words: “I think both parties have learned a lot from the collaboration so far. I think it is a nice tool that allows us to lead the way in the digital field on a small scale. Hopefully we can inspire others with this and we will soon adopt it more so that we can further develop together.”
